How does a chiller work?

A chiller is a device used in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems to remove heat from enclosed Spaces, thereby cooling the air. The following is a brief introduction to the working principle of the chiller:

1. Compression: Start with the compressor, which is part of the steam compression refrigeration cycle. The compressor pressurizes the refrigerant gas, raising its temperature and transforming it into a high-temperature and high-pressure gas.

2. Condensation: The hot high-pressure gas then flows through a heat exchanger called a condenser. Here, refrigerant gas releases heat into the surrounding environment (usually outside air or cooling water systems) and then dissipates from the building. The refrigerant condenses into a high-pressure liquid.

3. Expansion: The high-pressure liquid refrigerant then passes through an expansion valve (also known as a throttle valve), thereby reducing its pressure and temperature and transforming it into a low-temperature low-pressure liquid.

4. Evaporation: The cold refrigerant liquid then flows through another heat exchanger called the evaporator. In an evaporator, the refrigerant absorbs heat from the air or water that needs to be cooled. As the refrigerant absorbs heat, it evaporates back into gas.

5. Return compression: The refrigerant gas now reaches the cooler temperature and is at a lower pressure, then returns to the compressor and the cycle begins again.

The cold air or water produced by the evaporator can be used to cool buildings, industrial processes, or data centers. Coolers can be water-cooled, air-cooled, or a combination of both, depending on the application and environmental conditions.

The efficiency of an air-cooled cooler is usually measured by its coefficient of performance (COP), which is the ratio of cooling provided to energy input work. The higher the COP value, the higher the cooler efficiency.
